Dexter is fine now… he’s hanging out under the coffee table chewing on the ginormous bone I gave him as a get well peasant. They removed the offending claw and while he was under gave him a full mani/pedi. He doesn’t have to wear a cone thing (although those things are hilarious!) which I’m thinking is a pretty good sign. So yeah – the poor guy’s pretty out of it and his little legs are all shaky (doggie drugs must be really good stuff) but he’ll be fine.
Seriously why do they even have a dew claw?

Oh, He is so CUTE!!! I love terriers, they are all big dogs regardless of what they weigh. Glad things went well - it's always scary when they are anesthetized.

guinness came to us sans dew claws but dublin still has hers...all they do is create something for them to hurt and one more stinkin nail to trim, i swear!
Glad Dexter is OK! at least he won't have to worry about catching that claw again!

ReplyDeleteTrivia you have no interest in knowing: In lure coursing/sighthound events, dogs with their dewclaws intact win more often than dogs with dewclaws removed. Better traction? I don't know. I also don't know why I even know that. Why would a terrier still have dewclaws? To really dig in when going after rodents?

ReplyDeleteGlad Dexter is doing well! My cats have dewclaws and I never thought about why! Good question! Some hold-over from back in their ancestry when they descended from wild beasts!

I have no clue about the dewy claw either.. it must be like wisdom teeth for humans.. we don't know why..but they are just there.
