After playing around with charts/swatches until it worked I ended up with a staggered cable pattern that reminds me of the graphic circles in the “mod” retro fabrics that Ikea has been selling lately:

I like it.
And I even figured out how to upload/host/make available the .pdf file of the pattern! Click here to download for your very own:
Mod Cable Hat Pattern
Very exciting. And yes, I did draft the included chart in AutoCAD...
Also - this hasn't exactly been test knit so if anyone finds any issues with the pattern please let me know!
EDITED TO ADD:
The first line of the instructions was wrong… it should have read “Purl 3, Knit 3” and not “Knit 3, Purl 3.” I changed the file so it’s correct now I just wanted to warn everyone who may have already downloaded it. Sorry for the confusion! Oh and I’m working on a matching mitten pattern now so that should be available pretty soon…

OH I am so doing one!!!! Hmmm, gonna get me some yarn for it too!! Thanks for sharing!!
I love the hat--I'm making it for my roommate! I'm about all the way through the written instructions for the cables (just starting round 8 for the first time) and it looks great. Only found one mistake so far--at the beginning of the hat body, you have k3, p3 all the way around for four rounds. However, when you start the first part of the cables, you p3, k3--so you reverse your stockinette (which isn't how it is in the picture!) I just moved my 'starting' point by three stitches to get me onto your pattern, but the easiest fix would be to just P3, K3 for the body.
I'll let you know if I find any more errors or unclear passages.
Great pattern, though, I love it!
I could not get the pdf pattern - I have the newer version of Adobe help. Love this pattern . You are a genius!
