One week ago today we lost our little dog Dexter – the coolest dog ever – to cancer.
To say he is missed is an understatement.
I still don’t really have the words to express our grief. He took care of me and watched over his girl.
The first time they met.
He made Matt a dog person and kept our feet warm at night.
Shortly after we adopted him.
The best napping accessory.
He was family. Hell he made us a family. He was our “and dog makes three.”
His first bath at his new home.
The first sweater I ever knit. It even has a D on the back of it.
Especially heartbreaking is that his girl keeps looking for him. She crawls to the stairs and screams her pterodactyl doggie call, points up and says “DA”
She cries every time she’s put in her playpen because her dog isn’t there to keep her company. I didn’t even realize he did that. But when I had to switch laundry or run upstairs for something he would keep an eye on her for me.
And now I don’t know how to tell her that her best friend is gone.
I'm so sorry Jeanne! It's so hard to lose a beloved furry family friend. I've got tears thinking about my Hailey all over again. I suggest printing up some special favorite photos and hanging them up or putting them on a table to enjoy... *hugs*

ReplyDeleteI am so sorry. The house can seem so quiet without the warmth and affection of a beloved dog. We framed a photo of our Tess and hung it in the kitchen, where she was usually under our feet. Take good care of each other.
Oh no! I'm so, so sorry. I know how much he meant to you. (((HUGS)))

ReplyDeleteI am having my first grandbaby in September and can't wait to have picture of our Maggie with the baby. She is about 11 years old and we adopted her when she was about 4 years old found on the streets of the city.
With time you will be able to talk to your little girl about this Angel you all loved so much and who gave you all much love back.
I am sincerely so sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose a member of the family.

ReplyDeleteSo very sorry to read this, Jeanne.
ReplyDeleteI'm so, so sorry for your loss. Here's something I found on Ravelry awhile back that I think is beautiful and may help:
ReplyDeleteJust this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
I wish you all the best in recovering from this and holding all the happy memories close.
I am so sorry to hear about Dexter. He always looked like such an awesome little guy on your blog.
