2014: The Year We Do More than Just Survive.

So!  It's pretty late to be talking about resolutions, etc. but here we are.....

2013 was the Year of Upgrades.  And we made some HUGE ones:

June 2013:  He was so little and smooshy!!!!
Matt took the big kids to swimming lessons so I get to spend the morning relaxing w these two. #baby #dog #dogsofinstagram #stevensonpartyof5
Aaaand now he's big enough to terrorize the dog.  They grow so fast!

They are hiding from monsters. #seemslegit #siblings #stevensonpartyof5
The kids hanging out in our new basement.  500 square feet of demo/renovation.  (I'll post about it all eventually but here's a little bit about the playroom)

But with all the upgrades everything else kindof fell to shit.  I mean when you have a newborn (and 2 other kids OMG) or you're super pregnant tearing apart half your house, you go into SURVIVAL MODE.  You do ONLY WHAT YOU NEED TO SURVIVE*  House wise, life wise, everything.  I've gotten really good at prioritizing and ignoring and just getting through.  And I'm sick of it.  SO!

I hereby declare that 2014 will be the Year that We do More Than Just Survive.

Really it's just simple stuff like:
  • I want to get the kids back into swimming lessons - something that I think is really important but got dropped last year during the major home renovations never to be picked up again.
  • I want to purge/update my wardrobe which has been in a state of "just buy a couple of cheap things to get you through this season b/c God knows what size/shape your body will be in once this current fuckery is over" since 2008.
  • I want to take a trip somewhere with just the 5 of us.
  • I want creativity to be a part of my life again.  I realize that we're still along way from a place where I would be able to maintain Destination Yarn or do anything professional but it's not unrealistic to think that I could start knitting again on a regular basis.  Maybe even design a pattern or two.
  • I want to go visit some of our out of town friends who for the last couple of years have always come here because we were too in survival mode to be able to go to them.
I could telescope this thought out to just about anything. And obviously I know we're not ready to do most of this yet (see also: 7 month old baby who still wakes me up at night.  Not much is possible other than survival when you're really sleep deprived).  And with the Little Guy seconds away from crawling I know I will spend the next few months doing nothing but chase a baby yelling "OMG DON'T PUT THAT IN YOUR MOUTH AAARRUGH GROSS."

"What? I'm just playing with the big kids. NBD". #7months #stevensonpartyof5 #armycrawl
He started across the room and army crawled / scooted himself right into the center of the fun.
But a year is a long time.  So my goal is that when we ring in 2015 I can say that we are finally out of survival mode.

What about you guys?  What are your big plans for 2014?

*Bonus points if you get that reference.

I LOVE THIS!!! I wrote a similar post about my 2013 - I felt like I was just scrambling the whole time, and playing catch up from a crazy 2012. You have so much to be proud of in 2013!! I felt like I did nothing, but everything...and that's not how life should be lived. Your list is awesome - get down!!
I think 2013 was like that for a lot of people! You seem to have come through it pretty well, though, and I look forward to seeing what fun things you'll get to do this year!
My major goal for 2014 is to do more of the "that would be fun" things that come my way. I'm so tentative sometimes, and I want to be adventurous!!! :)

I plan on just making sure I take time for me. With an 8 year old and set of 19 month old twins, I am constatntly doing stuff for them and I forgot and me.__
I'm going to try to ignore the things I get worked up about but can't remember the next day. Life is too short to be irritated all the time.
yes. that's pretty much it exactly.
2013 was about saying goodbye to alot of things in my life. Fiance, house in the mountains (rental ppty), project I worked on for 18 years, back injury and 20 lbs (180 if you count the fiance). It was about letting go and moving on. Hopefully 2014 will be about saying hello to new opportunities. curious to see how it all turns out ;)

Swimming lessons are perfect! I want to get Liv into them as well. What a great year you had! It's amazing how fast the babies grow up. I always have these organization goals that fail. This year, my goal was to not obsess about my weight, but I decided to join WW again after all. Sometimes are goals turn and change quickly, and that's OK too. Great blog. I am so glad we were grouped together, and I cannot wait to read more!

I definitely know the feeling of being in survival mode! Setting goals and actually writing them down really goes a long way to accomplishing them. You definitely have reasonable and WORTHWHILE goals - I'm looking forward to reading about your journey!

I completely relate to this post. Actually I feel like we are barely surviving 2014 already, so this was an incentive to change things now. And that close up baby picture just made every motherly bone in my body go "awwww". Wishing you luck achieving your new year's goals.

Hi Jeanne!
What a great post. I know exactly what you mean by survival mode! I am a mum of four aged 10 to 3 months and survival is how it rolls. Like you said there is only so much you can do when you are sleep deprived. Its funny I read this post today as hubby and I have just been talking about how out of touch we have been and how as a family we need to regroup and star this year off fresh! Here's to breaking out of the rut and enjoying family time and me time this year!! Cheers, Hayley - From your SITS Tribe xx

Hi, I'm Becky from railroadmomma.com and in your SITS tribe! That is crazy how close we live :) I was just thinking of doing an official year recap, which has been crazy like yours. I totally did the closet purge before our big move, so liberating!
I think we all fall into survival mode sometimes. I love your goals for 2014 and that you seem to be pretty flexible with them, I think that flexibility is what will really help get those goals accomplished.
I'm stopping by from the SITS Tribe and I look forward to getting to know you and your blog better.
