Ohio Blogging Association All State Blog Swap.

Ok first of all thank you everyone for your thoughts on my Color Affection Shawl!  I have made a decision and a big post about that is coming tomorrow.  But today something really cool is going on - The Ohio Blogging Association is having a blog tour!  Everyone who wanted to play along was assigned a guest post partner.  Mine is Lilia from Lilia Write Now.  So I'll go ahead and turn things over to her:

Jeanne and I decided we were both going to blog on the same topic: Why blog? So here's my take.
When I first started blogging, (at Planet Positive) I was going through a few tough things. More than anything, I wanted someplace to put down my thoughts. My blog was like my online journal. I type faster than I write. Plus, it was a great way to share what I was going through with those nearest and dearest to me without having to have uncomfortable conversations. Things started looking up and the subject matter in my archived posts was too personal to share with the world at large at that time. So I decided not to blog there anymore and switched the blog to private. But, I still wanted to write. I needed an outlet for two things: my need to write; and my need to express my sarcasm. So I started a new blog, the one referenced above. And there are some posts in there that I really enjoyed. I enjoyed writing them and I enjoy reading them after the fact, and when I go back and revisit them after some time has gone by. I like when other people read my posts and get it. You know, really get it. And I love when people comment and can relate.

What I don't like? Feeling like I have something hanging over my head. The pressure of keeping up with my blogging. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I have millions of readers hanging on my every word. But, I see all these other delightful bloggers frequently tweeting links to their latest blog posts. And, I feel like Such. A. Slacker. Speaking of the lovely ladies of blogging (that sounded like G.L.O.W. gorgeous ladies of wrestling reference), now that I have opened up my world and interact with so many of these girls on Twitter, I also feel like I have to somewhat censor myself. I leave you with this question: whether it be twitter, facebook, or blogging, how do you figure out how to draw the line between censorship and being your authentic self?

Thank you for reading, and if you liked what you read, or would like to read more, hit me up at: Blog: Lilia Write Now Twitter: @lilialipps Website: Indulgence

Thanks so much, Lilia!!!  Great question about censorship and authentic self.  It's a tricky thing, that. One I'd love to hear everyone's take on.  Anyways for the full listing of blog swap participants, please visit Poise in Parma today.

For me, I don't blog about anything that I wouldn't talk about at work. It makes for a lot of censorship but I just can't jeopardize my career before I even get it off the ground by saying something stupid. I stick to the knitting and some minor life things. :)

This is a great standard and filter to have.

Good call on comparison. Any time I go down that wormhole I end up sad. Which is silly because I love my blog and I love doing it so there's no reason to be sad about any of it!

Nice post Lilia (and Jeanne)! Great question...
I censor a LOT, like Sarah. I use Pretty Knitty on the blog, for both mine and my family's anonymity...but there are parts of me that I totally share. Mostly my blog is knitting, but I also point some of my friends and family to the blog from my personal Facebook page, and they (obviously) know who I am, so I try to not say anything I would not say to a person's face on my blog. Even then, if it's not something I have already said in person, I still probably won't blog about it until after I do. Feelings of friends and family are easy to damage and very difficult to mend.

As for comparisons, do what you love! If it gets to feeling like it's bogging you down, lay off for a bit. I think that when you blog for YOU first, you're going to be authentic, and you'll just enjoy it more. Sure you'll write some posts you love more than others, but above every one of your readers, you need to love your blog! Running off now to check it out...thanks for the guest post!

what a great post! I too sometimes feel the pressure of keeping up with my blog or better yet keeping upwith reading everyone else's blogs and promoting mine as well. It can be alot. I agree with some of the ladies it's good to take a break once we strat to feel like this. :)

Thanks for all the responses everyone! It is always a fine line to walk on both issues.
I try not to keep up with everyone and just blog when I can. I feel like I am falling behind as well and being a total slacker, but hey life has kinda gotten in the way of writing....

Life often gets in the way of my blog, too....

The topic of my blog (family friendly fun in Northeast Ohio) is more a resource for families, not a personal journal. That being said, I do watch what I include on my posts reviewing the activities my family has participated in. I have chosen not to include pictures of my kids in the posts. It's a personal choice and I don't look down upon those that do include pictures of their children. It's just not something I want to do.
That can be difficult. If I post about my kids (college age) they get to approve it. I don't blog to hurt feelings and I believe in a separation between work and home, so I feel the same about the blog and my homelife. Since it's a cooking blog though, I'm not using it as a sounding board as much as someone who blogs about all aspects of their life.

That is a very good question! I think balance is the key. Keep your voice but don't post anything that could come back to bite you. :) I love to write too! Just stopping by from the OBA Swap to say hello.
